do pó ao pulso: Solo exhibition by Yohana Oizumi

Making use of prayer and deep meditation before and during the making of her works, as if in a trance, the artist brings up issues of women in Christian history, as well as in her own, amalgamating her body with those of the characters. Yohana Oizumi is constantly observing the transformation of life, of her work, and of herself, reinventing herself every day. If the name Yohana means “full of God's grace”, Yohana Oizumi is also full of energy, notable in her performances and her works in which she transmutes simple materials into complex and impressive works.

In Yohana Oizumi's first solo exhibition, based at BABEL•SP, the artist presents 22 works in different media – drawings, sculptures, and paintings, all composed with various materials: acrylic paint, bitumen, charcoal, oil pastel, among others. An installation made with 6000 small sculptures (“little fingers”) molded manually in clay, is also part of the set. The exhibition occupies the entire ground floor of the gallery and also includes two videos of the artist's performances. On opening day, the artist will perform for guests at 3pm.

About Yohana Oizumi's work, curator Rejane Cintrão comments: “It is important to know the process of the artist's work in order to better understand her extensive work, despite her youth. Making use of prayer and deep meditation before and during the making of her works, as if in a trance, the artist brings up issues of women in Christian history, and her own history, amalgamating her body with those of the characters. (...) uses art as a means of living and observing the transformation of life, of her work, and of herself, reinventing herself every day. If the name Yohana means “full of God's grace”, Yohana Oizumi is also full of energy, notable in her performances and her works in which she transmutes simple materials into complex and impressive works.
